Sustainable Design

April 9, 2018

Sustainability is a standard consideration during the product design process, even if designing for sustainability gets dismissed quickly by many designers. Many product designs focus on using materials that can easily be recycled but more contemporary considerations center on the whole product life cycle, including materials, manufacturing processes, transportation, recycling, and disposal.

For detailed discussions, the Wikipedia page describes sustainable design across the globe and various industries in great detail - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_design

Even the Government’s GSA has a section discussing sustainable design even though in their case, they relate it largely to real estate rather than product design - https://www.gsa.gov/real-estate/design-construction/design-excellence/sustainability/sustainable-design

There is also a very thoughtful Ted talk by Leyla Acaroglu which discusses the full impact of sustainable design across complete product life cycles.  It’s very entertaining and establishes the concept of that everything that all materials in our products originally came from nature. And that “functionality defines environmental impact” -https://www.ted.com/talks/leyla_acaroglu_paper_beats_plastic_how_to_rethink_environmental_folklore/up-next?referrer=playlist-sustainability_by_design#t-1071119
