Background

  • The spice mixture that originates in, surprise, surprise NOT Italy. Like many spice compositions (a collection of multiple spices), they have been put together for convenience and typically outside the region where they are attributed to. The reason is relatively simple. An Italian chef would have the 6 individual spices available and use them for dishes as they see fit (maybe some of them, maybe all of them, but probably always in different ratios). We get it. But if you want to quickly add a sophisticated Italian flavor made of great organic ingredients, our mix fits the bill. No regrets.

Cooking

  • Traditionally, the combination of the 6 herbs varies for each cook and is typically put together by combining the individual spices based on the individual dish. Our composition is designated to highlight all 6 spices and not have one become overbearing. The high-quality organic herbs make it just so much easier to quickly add the flavors of the Mediterranean to an individual dish. It works for pizza, grilled meats, and seafood as well as soups or stews.

Cultural

  • Since the Italian herbs were composed outside of Italy, there is no cultural connection to Italy. That is not true for the individual herbs which are very important in Italy and are described under the individual spice listings. We could always add the cultural importance of the individual herbs and consider them as mega-important for Italy. In more general terms, Italian herbs, individually or together, are used by home-chefs all over the world. The great fragrance and flavor is immediately recognized by cooks and guests and is always a great crowd pleaser (and communicates great food).

Spiritual

  • Since the Italian herbs were composed outside of Italy, there is no spiritual connection to Italy. That is not true for the individual herbs which are very important in Italy and are described under the individual spice listings.

Medicinal

  • Needless to say that Italian herbs, medicinal benefits, and the Catholic church are closely intertwined. We will lay out the medicinal benefits of the remaining herbs that make up the Italian herbs under the individual spice names. However, here is a great NIH document that connects illnesses with treatments as established by the Catholic Church - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4468812/  Needless to say this doc, especially table I and II are eye-opening.  Enjoy
